Your VA Transition Assistance Program (TAP) Benefits Advisors

VA Transition Assistance Program (TAP) Benefits Advisors are trained professionals who guide transitioning Service members and their families through the military-to-civilian transition, ensuring they are informed about eligibility, application processes, and the full range of VA benefits and resources available to support their next steps. Located on many military installations across the country, they also provide virtual support to ensure access regardless of location.

Core Services Provided by VA TAP Benefits Advisors:

  • VA Benefits & Services Course Facilitation – Benefits Advisors facilitate the mandatory VA Benefits and Services curriculum, delivering this required TAP course to ensure transitioning Service members understand the full scope of VA benefits available to them prior to separation.
  • One-on-One Assistance – Personalized in-person or virtual assistance covering the full range of VA benefits — including healthcare, education, housing, life insurance, and disability — to answer questions, clarify eligibility, and help individuals understand their options based on their unique service history and circumstances.
  • Warm Handovers – Serving as the VA’s designated point of contact for warm handovers from DoD during Capstone, Benefits Advisors personally connect at-risk transitioning Service members to VA representatives, community partners, or other resources to ensure a smooth and supportive transfer of care or services.
  • Referral & Resource Navigation – Identifying and connecting transitioning Service members and their families with the right VA programs, accredited VSOs, community organizations, and federal resources based on their individual circumstances and needs.
  • Military Life Cycle (MLC) Modules – Facilitating 14 Military Life Cycle courses designed to deliver targeted VA benefits education at key stages of a Service member’s career, reinforcing awareness and readiness long before the transition process begins.
  • Transition Support & Engagement – Supporting Service members throughout the transition process by participating in pre-separation counseling and Capstone events, connecting individuals with VA programs and community resources, and actively participating in installation and community events such as Yellow Ribbon, career fairs, and spouse programs.
